A typical feature wall takes several days to complete, because each of the thin layers needs time to partially dry before it can be burnished and the next coat added. For bathrooms and wet rooms, Tadelakt is applied and then sealed so it is genuinely water-resistant, unlike standard Venetian plaster which is decorative rather than waterproof. This is what allows a seamless, tactile plaster finish to be used where you would normally expect tiles, giving a wet area a soft, continuous surface with no grout lines to maintain.

Once sealed, these finishes are hard-wearing and easy to live with. A Tadelakt bathroom has no grout lines to scrub or reseal, and a polished plaster feature wall tends to gain character over time rather than chipping or dating like some paint trends, so the finish still looks considered years after it goes on.

Genuine polished plaster is a specialist finish, and it is not something most general decorating firms take on in-house.
